Steel lintels

Steel lintels are a popular option for structural support above doorways, windows, and other openings. Made from durable metal, they’re designed to bear the load above the gap, maintaining the integrity of the building. More so than stone or concrete lintels, steel lintels are usually hidden by the construction that’s built up around them. This is especially true for cavity lintels. Steel lintels are usually higher strength too (especially heavy-duty ones), although this also tends to mean they cost more. You can find detailed specifications in each product’s data sheet.

Steel lintels are available in a wide range of shapes for different jobs, including timber frame, solid wall and eaves lintels. Popular brands include Catnic steel lintels and IG lintels, both of which offer a variety of options. From small residential builds to large commercial developments, steel lintels are trusted across the UK for their reliability and ease of installation.

Steel lintel FAQs

Am I okay drilling into a steel lintel?

Yes, it’s usually fine to drill holes into a steel lintel. Drilling a small number (e.g. for a curtain rail or fixing) won’t affect the lintel’s integrity, although you’ll need to use the proper kit to make a hole. A HSS (high-speed steel) drill bit is best, as these are designed to drill through metal.
