Copper nails

Copper nails are used where corrosion resistance is critical, such as for roofing and external joinery. They’re particularly suited to securing slates and tiles, as well as attaching timber cladding in coastal or high-moisture environments. Builders also use copper nail types with larger heads for lead flashing, as they can reduce the risk of galvanic reaction (metal corrosion) with other metals.

Modern copper nails are typically available in annular ring shank, plain shank, and clout nail forms. These options give flexibility for load-bearing requirements, material compatibility, and environmental conditions. Unlike galvanised or stainless-steel nails, copper nails develop a patina over time and will not stain adjacent materials. They’re softer than steel, so take care when driving them into dense hardwoods. Use a copper nail when you're fixing non-ferrous metals or want long-term resistance to weather exposure.
