What is planed timber?

Planed timber is timber that’s been machine-smoothed on one or more sides to create a uniform, clean surface. It’s also sometimes referred to as dressed timber or finished timber.

What does ‘planed’ mean?

In the context of timber, ‘planed’ means that the surface of the wood has been smoothed and flattened using a planer tool. The planer shaves off thin layers of material to leave a clean, even finish. In the modern timber industry, machine planers are normally used, but timber can be planed by hand using a tool called a hand plane. This allows for more control in shaping and smoothing the wood but is slower and requires more skill.

Can you use planed timber outside?

Yes, but only if it’s been properly treated. Look for planed treated timber with the correct durability rating for outdoor work. These materials have been pressure treated to survive for longer outside.
