Lime has been a trusted building material for centuries. In modern construction, there are different lime options for different jobs. These include hydrated lime, also called calcium hydroxide or ‘slaked lime’, a fine white powder that’s added mortars, plasters and renders. Hydrated lime can come as a fine white powder, or as a paste called lime putty.
There’s also hydraulic lime, which is used to restore and repair mortar joints in historic structures. Hydraulic lime is useful in conservation because of its similarity to traditional materials and is also used where comparable modern products would be too strong.
Popular lime products include Hydralime, Blue Circle’s brand-name hydrated lime, as well as bagged limes by Hanson and Breedon.

Hydrated lime, or calcium hydroxide, is a fine, dry powder made by adding water to quicklime. It can also come as a paste called lime putty.
In construction, hydrated lime can be added to mortar to make it more workable, durable and water resistant. It can also be added to plaster or render to make it stronger, more adhesive and more water resistant.
Hydraulic and hydrated lime are two different products with different uses in construction. Broadly, hydraulic lime is used for restoration and repair on historic buildings – it allows building movement and breathability from the masonry. Hydrated lime is a more common product that’s added to cement, plaster and render to improve their properties (see above).
