Damp proof courses

A damp proof course (DPC) prevents moisture from rising through masonry walls by creating a barrier at or near ground level. In modern construction, it’s typically installed during the build using a polyethylene DPC roll or similar membrane. You'll also find retrofit solutions for remedial work on older structures. Horizontal DPCs are placed above foundations, while vertical barriers may be added at junctions or returns where required. Compliance with Part C of the Building Regulations is standard practice.

Historically, slate or bitumen layers served the same function before polymer-based systems became common. While traditional materials may still be used in specialist work, flexible DPC membranes now dominate due to ease of handling and consistent performance. Choosing the correct width and thickness depends on wall construction and local site conditions. DPCs are available in pre-cut rolls or can be trimmed on-site.
