What is dry lining?

Dry lining, also known as plasterboarding or partitioning, is the process of cladding internal walls or ceilings with plasterboard to create a smooth surface. Boards can be attached directly to an existing wall, or to a wooden or metal frame to make a partition wall. Dry lining is widely used in the UK construction industry, since it’s usually quicker, easier and cheaper than alternatives like plastering or partitioning with brickwork.

What’s the difference between dry lining and plastering?

Dry lining and plastering are separate processes, although they both use forms of plaster / gypsum. Both are used to create a smooth flat finish for internal walls. For dry lining walls or ceilings, flat, dry boards made of plaster (plasterboards) are attached to an internal wall or frame. For plastering, wet plaster is applied directly to a surface (which may or may not have been created by dry lining first) and smoothed out.
